On Friday, May 19th, we enjoyed a wonderful day as we participated in IHM's annual Race for Education / Field Day event! We had so much fun walking laps around the Race for Ed course, playing all of the fun field day games and watching the big kids participate in the annual Tug of War competition! What a great day! Here is a look at some of our fun...
We Love Our Moms!
On Friday, May 12th, we celebrated our moms with a special Mother's Day picnic! The week's wet weather forced our fun to remain indoors but we had a great time spreading our blankets and sharing lunch with our moms. We hope all of our moms know how very LOVED they are! Happy Mother's Day!
A Day at the Farm ~ May 2nd, 2017
On Tuesday, May 2nd, we enjoyed a fun-filled day at Sharp's at Waterford Farm! First, we got to meet the farmer's goats and baby chickens! We really loved feeding the goats a tasty morning snack!
Next, we visited the farmer's barn and learned all about seeds! We got to dissect a lima bean seed and see what was inside!
After the hayride, we toured the greenhouse and planted our own plants to bring home!
Following a picnic lunch, we concluded our day with some fun farm games like sack races and fill the bucket! What a fun day!
GRANDPARENTS DAY! ~ April 28th, 2017
On Friday, April 28th, we were so excited to welcome our grandparents to school! We celebrated with a special prayer service and then brought them back to our classrooms to show off our smarts! We read them stories, showed them how we can read and write, practiced making equations and showed them around our classroom and school! We hope they enjoyed their visit as much as we enjoyed having them! Here are some pictures from our fun...
Happy Easter!
During the week prior to Spring Break, we spent a lot of time learning about the different days and events of Holy Week as we prepared to celebrate Easter. We read stories, made crafts and participated in a special Easter Egg Hunt! As a special treat before our vacation, we celebrated with a fun lunch time "Bunny Bar" that featured tasty fruits and vegetables like lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, strawberries and grapes!
Welcome spring!
This week, we celebrated the start of spring! We were so happy to see our special bear friends who had been hibernating all winter long! When they woke, they were very hungry - so we treated them to a special Teddy Bear Picnic of Teddy Grahams, honey and strawberry jam! Yum!
Later in the day, we read non-fiction texts about robins - a favorite springtime friend! We recorded facts that we learned about robins and did our own non-fiction writing!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
On March 17th, we had such fun celebrating St. Patrick's Day! We read stories to learn about St. Patrick and learned about some of the symbols of modern day St. Patrick's Day celebrations, such as shamrocks, rainbows and leprechauns! To study rainbows, we conducted a fun science experiment! We learned how to mix primary colors together to make secondary colors! Like all good scientists, we started with a question, made some predictions and then recorded our results! Science is cool!
Later in the day, we shared a St. Patrick's Day story of friendship between a leprechaun and a dog...and then we followed clues to find leprechaun treasure hidden right in our own classroom! So much fun!

A Note About Superkids Online Fun...
Now that we have moved into the Superkids Club portion of our Superkids reading program, there is a slight change to the way books appear in your child's online library. For each unit, there will be a total of four stories. One story will be our unit story that we will read together as a class. The other three stories are leveled readers that we will be reading together in small groups in the classroom. These books are coded according to their level of difficulty with one, two or three diamonds in the corner of the front cover of the book. The higher number of diamonds, the higher level of difficulty of the book with regards to word count, memory word usage, and complexity of the decoding required. While your child will not read every book in the classroom with their particular reading group, they are always welcome to listen to or practice the other books for the unit for additional practice at home. Happy Reading!
The SEason of Lent
On Wednesday, March 1st, we celebrated Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. We spent some time with our prayer partners making Lenten promises about ways that we will try to grow closer to Jesus during this special season of our Church. We also began our classroom Lenten Kindness Challenge! I am so excited that our tree is already beginning to bloom with kindness! Don't forget to send me notes/emails about any acts of kindness you've witnessed at home! I love hearing about all of the ways my kindergarten friends are showing love and kindness to others!
The 100th Day of Kindergarten!
On Wednesday, February 8th, we celebrated the 100th Day of Kindergarten with a day of fun! We were so excited to welcome Zero the Hero to the classroom for a special visit! Zero was excited to see how we have learned to count to 100 in many ways - by ones, fives and tens!
We participated in several 100th day centers - we played a counting game with dice, filled the 100s chart with 100 kisses, made creative pictures with 100 two-dimensional shapes and built structures with 100 cups! We also wrote a new class book about what we would do with $100! Be on the lookout for the book as it makes its rounds!

Learning to Serve ~ Do Small Things With Great Love...
Ms. Lori has been spending some time teaching us all about service and how little things that we do can mean great things to other people. She has found several opportunities for us to touch other people - making blankets for Project Linus, putting together cat toys and treats for the animal shelter and making special cards for our veterans! We look forward to more service project opportunities throughout the year!
Welcome, Winter!
We spent a lot of time this week learning about our new season - winter! We studied some of different types of winter weather we might experience and we studied the different habits of animals in winter! We learned what it means to hibernate, migrate and adapt!
As we learned about hibernation, we had fun with our special bears from home as we prepared them for their long winter’s nap! We wore our pajamas to school, made a special craft, watched the DisneyNature documentary, “Bears” and enjoyed a tasty treat of munchkins and juice! We can’t wait to wake our bears in the spring!

Happy New Year!
Welcome back! I hope you all had relaxing breaks filled with wonderful family time! We came back to school ready to work in 2017! We had a great time ringing in the new year on Tuesday with a special countdown, party hats and noisemakers!
As we jumped back into our Superkids work this week, we met three new friends - Tic, Tac and Toc! These three friends love to have fun together and will be teaching us all about the letter T and the sound it makes in words!
In Math, we continued to work on addition strategies. We learned how to use the plus and equals symbols to write addition sentences! As we continue through the year, we will be practicing our basic addition facts in preparation for first grade!

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas...
It's the most wonderful time of the year - and that is keeping us quite busy in K-M! Over the last few weeks, we have met two new Superkids - Lily and Icky! Lily taught us all about the letter L and the sound it makes in words and Icky taught us our newest short vowel sound - the short i sound! We have been practicing listening for vowel sounds in the middle of words like pig and sick. We have also been doing a lot of practicing with blending sounds to read and spell! Slowly but surely, we are becoming READERS and we are so excited!
As you can imagine, we have been spending a lot of time preparing for Christmas! We have been learning about the church season of Advent, we have read the Christmas story from the Bible! We can't wait for Christmas!

November 23rd ~ We are Thankful...
We had so much fun learning about and celebrating Thanksgiving this week! We have a lot to be thankful for!
We have been learning about the Native Americans and Pilgrims and how they lived at the time of the first Thanksgiving. We learned how they had to hunt for their own food and make their own homes and clothes. On Tuesday, we had a special visitor in kindergarten. Mr. Hanlon came to show us some of the hunting tools that the Native Americans used - we got to touch and see a lot of interesting things during his visit!

After our visit with Mr. Hanlon, it was time to prepare for our special kindergarten feast! We all helped to prepare a tasty cranberry relish to share with our friends in K-S!
On Tuesday afternoon, we gathered together with our friends in K-S for a Thanksgiving prayer service and a tasty feast! We are thankful to have such wonderful kindergarten friends!
On Tuesday, we made special story telling bracelets to help us remember the story of the first Thanksgiving! We also made writing webs to tell what we are thankful for. Then we spent some time with our 5th grade prayer partners. We are lucky to have such a kind and helpful group of prayer partners this year! We love when they come to visit our class!

This Week in Kindergarten...
This week, we met Sal, our newest Superkid! Sal loves sports and games and has been helping us to learn all about the letter S and the sound it makes in words! We continue to practice blending and reading new words!
We love to write! Now that we are starting to unlock the keys to reading and writing, we’re discovering new things all around us! We have learned that we can read many of the words that we encounter every day - especially the words around our classroom! One of our new favorite activities is “Writing the Room” where we take our whiteboards around the room, find a word we know, write it and read it to a friend! How fun!
The children have also been doing a great job earning their skill feathers for their Native American headbands! Keep practicing their personal information (name writing, phone number, address and birthdate) with them this weekend. Feathers can be earned up until Tuesday morning before our kindergarten feast!
Turkeys in Disguise!
We did such a great job disguising our Thanksgiving turkeys! If you get a chance to walk our halls this week, be sure to check them all out on display! So creative and fun!

This week, we met our newest Superkid, Alf! Alf loves to go camping and imagines he’s on exciting adventures - except those “antsy ants” are always after him!
Alf is teaching us all about the letter A and the short /a/ sound in words! We’ve been listening for both the beginning sound (as in apple) and the medial sound (as in hat)! We have been practicing distinguishing between the short o and short a sounds in words - continue to practice this at home with our friends! They’re doing a great job!
In math, we worked on comparing amounts using math words like “greater than”, “less than” and “equal to”. The children have been doing such a great job with this! There are a lot of fun ways to practice comparing quantities at home - at the dinner table, while playing, while exploring outside! Math is all around us!

A Short Week In Kindergarten! ~ September 6, 2016
This Week In Kindergarten...
What a wacky week! Thank you for being so flexible and understanding as we navigated through a strange extension of summer! Hopefully the heat is behind us and we can focus on getting settled into our normal school routine!

Before the heat set in, we were quite busy this week in kindergarten! We started our new reading series, Superkids!
We were so excited to meet our first Superkid, Cass! The children have gotten off to a great start! They love singing our song about Cass and have been working hard to hear and recognize the /k/ sound in words that start with the letter C! Next week, we will spend some time working on our pre-writing fine motor skills as we prepare to begin formal handwriting lessons!

In Math, we worked on identifying items that are “alike” and “different” and practiced applying different sorting rules to a collection of items. Next week, we will start looking at and exploring the attributes of different two-dimensional shapes!
Back to School Night ~ September 13th at 6:30pm!
Please plan to join us on Tuesday, September 13th for our Back to School Night. During this important evening, parents will have the opportunity to learn about our kindergarten curriculum and policies as well as hear important information from the school office.
Parents are invited to begin the evening in the gym at 6:30pm. Parents only, please. Children should not attend.
Hot Lunch Begins This Week!
If your child will be ordering hot lunch, please send their lunch money in an envelope in their folder labeled with their name and lunch choice. We will be looking in the folders for lunch money - please do not leave it loose in the backpack!
I was able to snap a few quick pictures of lunch time in our special "Kindergarten Cafe" last week...enjoy!

Welcome to Kindergarten!
What a GREAT first week! We worked so hard to begin learning our daily kindergarten routines including how to use our good manners during lunch and snack time and how to play safely with our friends during recess. The children are really doing a wonderful job and we are having so much fun getting to know each other!
Next week, we will begin Superkids, our kindergarten language arts program! As we move through the school year, the children will "meet" a group of kids and share in their adventures while they help to teach us how to read and write! We will also begin working through our Math curriculum! We're excited about all of the new things we're going to learn this year!

A few reminders...
- Please make sure you are checking your child's folder every night. This folder should return to school daily.
- The milk program will begin on Tuesday, September 6th.
- Please pack daily snacks separately from lunch. It is easier for the children to go to their backpacks to retrieve their daily snack rather than having to root through their lunchbox. As a reminder, we do not allow juice boxes or other drinks from home with snack. We provide water for all of the children during snack time.
- Please help your child learn their special class number (on their folder). We will play a game next week to see who has learned their number. The children should be able to recognize their number by name ("nineteen") and by sight (19).
- We are hoping to announce our fall field trip date very soon. PLEASE...make sure your Shield the Vulnerable training is complete! All field trip chaperones MUST be Shield trained in order to attend. No exceptions to this policy can be made. Information on Shield training can be found here. Please contact Debbie Sperato in the school office with any questions regarding this training program.
